LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT
PIONEER
For Amazon, L & D is not just a tick-box exercise, but rather an integral part of the business’ s strategy, which has helped drive ROI by aligning workforce skills with the evolving needs of the business. Launched in 2019, Amazon’ s“ Upskilling 2025” was a commitment to retrain and upskill a large portion of its workforce by 2025. Initially, Amazon pledged around US $ 700m to train 100,000 employees across the US for technical roles that are in high demand, such as cloud computing, IT support and automation. In doing so, the business has been able to reduce its reliance on external hiring, which is often expensive and time-consuming, while improving internal mobility and retention. But Amazon didn’ t stop there. Once Upskilling 2025 came to a close, the business soon launched“ Future Ready 2030,” committing billions to train workers in AI, cloud and digital skills. The goal? To better prepare employees for the rapid technological change
ahead, while expanding access to education to strengthen Amazon’ s long-term talent pipeline. The payoff is clear: by investing in L & D, Amazon drove down hiring costs, strengthened retention and cultivated a workforce that’ s not just keeping up with change – but driving it.
